Canada has a low organ donation rate. Until the science-fiction-future becomes a reality and we can grow our own organs, lives are saved through organ donations. We could turn the donation rate around, and improve the quality of lives for thousands of people if Canadiana law were changed so deceased persons were automatically organ donors. People could have their family opt out of the procedure instead, if they want their organs burned or rotted with the rest of their corpse.
We might finally satisfy the demand for healthy organs with a change like this. What is stopping legislators from making this common sense switch now?
In the meantime, we have to depend on heroic family members who in a moment of grief make the best decision to continue the life for some of their loved-ones’ tissues, and heroic neighbours who decide for themselves. Make everyone a donor by default.
